Beasthood Explanation

Postby Tsmp » Mon Apr 20, 2015 11:01 am

Surprise guide time! I'm pretty sure I can trust you guys to know this stuff, but in case there's anyone here who doesn't I'll make a basic summary and guide about Beasthood.

Let's get one thing out of the way first: There is no beast mode. Building up your Beasthood meter does not cause your character to turn into a full beast, and there does not appear to be any way in the game to do so.

Now that that's been said, let's talk about what Beasthood actually does.

Beasthood is a substat in Bloodborne that governs a particular body buff, referred to in-game as "transformation" (note that no actual transformation occurs when this buff is active). You'll know this buff is active when your character is giving off a dusty brown smoke effect with small tufts of dark fur and making a hissing smoke noise. During this 'transformation', as it's called, attacking enemies will cause a meter to appear above your character and fill slightly with each hit, and as the meter fills the physical damage you deal will increase and the damage you take will increase. Heavy attacks like R2s, two-handed L2s, and L1 attacks will fill the meter faster than R1 attacks. A higher Beasthood stat gives you a longer meter, which means you can fill it more to deal greater damage at the cost of lower defense.

Beasthood has inverse scaling with Insight; the lower your Insight, the higher your Beasthood. It can be further boosted by attire and runes, with the Ashen Hunter attire giving the highest bonus and the Beast +100 rune (found in chalice dungeons) being the strongest rune for it.

There is one consumable item and one weapon that activates this buff. The first, and most common, is the Beast Blood Pellet. Beast Blood Pellets last for only a short time (one minute, I think?), but allow Beasthood buildup with any weapon until its duration ends. Once the timer runs out, the meter will disappear and all damage/defense changes revert to normal. Beast Blood Pellets can be found as loot in lower Old Yharnam and the first half of the Forbidden Woods, drop randomly from the Wolf Beast enemies in lower Old Yharnam, and can be bought from the insight messengers for 1 insight each after finding the Cosmic Eye Watcher badge.

The weapon Beast Claw grants an indefinite Beasthood effect on your character when used in its two-handed form (the one that gives you giant wolf claws). The meter will not disappear when you change the weapon back or switch to a different weapon, but you cannot fill it again until switching back to the Beast Claw and pressing L1. This means you can use the Beast Claw to fill your Beasthood meter, then switch to a different weapon with higher AR to take advantage of the damage boost.

If you use a Beast Blood Pellet while using the Beast Claw, their effects do not stack. The Beast Blood Pellet will overwrite the Beast Claw's own version of the buff, and when 60 seconds have passed your Beasthood meter will just disappear and you'll have to fill it again.

There is currently not much data on what the exact damage bonus and defense drop at each amount of Beasthood is, though I've personally seen something around a x2 bonus at 500 Beasthood with a full meter and this person on reddit has claimed a 60% increase at 201 Beasthood.

Fun tip: try using Beast Blood Pellets with Logarius' Wheel. Its two-handed heavy attacks have multiple hits, which causes the Beasthood meter to fill at an insanely fast rate. You can then switch to a Kirkhammer or something to clobber enemies for over 1,000 damage per swing.
